Sample 18 hour beginner language course

Recommended format:

  • Twelve 1.5-hour sessions
  • 2 sessions a week for 6 weeks (recommended but flexible)

Aim:

A beginner language course aims to provide you with the tools necessary to dealing with everyday situations - when you are on holiday for example.

Content:

Your course content will be adapted to your objectives but here are some examples of what you could learn in an 18 hour holiday-oriented course.

  • Greetings and introductions (formal/informal)
  • Alphabet and spelling
  • Countries and nationalities
  • Numbers: counting and currency
  • Feelings: describing your own and asking about other people’s wellbeing
  • Personal information: giving and asking about personal information (nationality, job, where you live and work, age, etc.)
  • Work: job descriptions and places of work
  • Food: meals, drinks and snacks - reading a menu and ordering a meal in a restaurant
  • Preferences: expressing your own and enquiring about others’
  • Hotels: booking and enquiring
  • Leisure activities: asking questions and describing leisure activities and hobbies – enquiring about and booking activities
